  Roadmap to Driver's License

  First Stop: Driver's Ed

If you are a teen under the age of 17-1/2, you must first complete a Driver's Ed course before taking the written exam to get your permit. Drive2Pass North offers a convenient, DMV approved online Driver's Ed course. Click here for more information. Once you have completed this course and received your certificate of completion, you are then ready to head to the DMV to take your written test and get your permit.

    Second Stop: Get Your Permit

You are now ready to go to the DMV to take the written test and get your permit. Be prepared to fill out the Driver's License Application (DL 44) when you get to the DMV or click here to fill it out online in advance. If you are a minor, both of your parents must sign it. Appointments are not necessary for the written test but are advised. If you don't have an appointment, make sure to show up to the DMV at least one hour or more before closing.
If you are between the ages of 15-1/2 and 17-1/2 and have completed your Driver's Ed course, this is what you will need to bring with you... your pink Certificate of Completion (DL 400C), your birth certificate, your social security card, proof of address, and about $35 for the DMV. After passing the test, you will receive your permit. Your permit is not valid until you take your first Behind-the-Wheel lesson. Call or text Sonja at (805) 698-0102 to schedule your first lesson.
If you are older than 17-1/2, you are not required to take Driver's Ed but you are required to have a permit in order to practice driving, take driving lessons, or take the Behind-the-Wheel test at the DMV. You should still study prior to taking the written test to get your permit and there are several ways to study. The online Driver's Ed course is helpful and you are welcome to take it but you could study on your own to prepare for the test. Get a copy of the Driver's Handbook at your local DMV or click here to read the online version. There are also free online DMV practice tests that are fun to do and are very helpful. Click here to take the practice tests. This is what you will need to bring with you to the DMV... your birth certificate, your social security card, proof of address, and about $35 for the DMV.

  Third Stop: Behind-the-Wheel Driving Lessons

(This is where I come in!) Your permit is not valid until you have completed your first Behind-the-Wheel lesson. Call or text Sonja at (805) 698-0102 to schedule your lesson.
I will sign your permit at your first lesson and then you will be allowed to begin practicing with your parents or another licensed adult that is at least 25 years old. If you would like more information about Drive2Pass North's behind-the-wheel course, please click here. After you have had your permit for a minimum of 6 months, completed all your driving lessons (6 hours), and practiced with your parent or guardian for at least 50 hours, you will then be able to move on to the fourth stop: getting your driver's license!
(Drive2Pass North also offers behind-the-wheel lessons to adults of all ages.)

Fourth Stop: Get Your Driver's License

This is a very exciting step for you; it's time to take the Behind-the-Wheel driving test at the DMV. For this test you will need an appointment, no walk-ins are accepted. You may call the DMV at (800) 777-0133 to schedule your Behind-the-Wheel test or click here to schedule online. If you would like to read over the DMV Checklist that Drive2Pass North has prepared, click here.
Once you pass, SMILE for your picture, you are now a licensed driver!
